Kids And Cell Phones

The use of a cell phone is a very important part of our lives as we grow up. It is considered one of the most convenient inventions of modern times.

It was designed to help make communication much easier for everyone. It even is a device used by children and teens.

Important Issues

However, the use of cell phones by minors (and even adults) is not entirely without its problems. The germs that it attracts could cause diseases and some of the emissions from it even cause cancer.

Another problem is that children who get a mobile phone may play games on it way too often. They may even text to often right in class when they are supposed to be doing their work or listening to their teachers.

The problem is even more compounded if they have picture texting and/or access to internet or e-mail on the phone. The danger here is that it makes pornography and other inappropriate viewing material to be more easily downloaded onto the phone and/or passed around.

More Extreme Problems

Sometimes children get addicted to the use of cell phones. They may even steal money to buy phone minutes or they may start taking pictures in places that are inappropriate, such as while hiding in the bathroom.

They may even use it as a way to communicate with drug dealers or may use it in some other corrupt way. For instance, maybe gang members use it.

Is it Necessary?

A parent often gives their child a cell phone for status reasons, or they did it because the child may have begged for one.

It can even become a competitive icon as to say which family is more affluent or rich or important than another. It can be a status symbol just as much as a car or laptop.

Parents can for sure get carried away (no offense to any) when it comes to buying a cell phone. Before purchasing one every parents should ask themselves what the benefits and drawbacks are of purchasing the phone.

Then, if a parent so decides that the child needs a phone they should decide what “extras” (i.e. camera, multimedia storage, internet, or keypad) are appropriate for which age. The younger children just may need a phone to call in case of an emergency.

A phone even for an elementary-aged child may even be considered a necessity nowadays. This is true, especially if the family does not have a phone hooked up to a wall in the home and less families are getting landline phones nowadays.

A teenager may request from their parents a fancier phone. This can be a privilege that a young one would earn. However, no matter what age a child is that child should not be given a device unless they are going to use it properly and for what it is intended.

Then, if your child abuses the privilege of having a cell phone, the parent is advised to take it away. Maybe later on the child or teen will have another chance. However, in the time being that child or teen should have it taken away completely.
