How To Trim Baby’s Nails

Baby’s nails have a tendency to grow very fast. Therefore, they need to be trimmed often. There are a few important reasons why it is important to cut baby’s nails.

One of these reasons is that even though baby’s nails are smoother and thinner than adult’s nails they can easily scratch a woman. These little nails even sometimes scratch a woman who is breastfeeding a baby.

Therefore, it seems to be the consensus that something needs to be done about it. Therefore, the next two sections will tell you exactly how this can be done.

In different instances different ways of trimming the nails may be used. The exact method chosen may depend on personal preference but it could be based on a variety of factors.

The Routine

Parents are encouraged to trim their baby’s nails at least once a week. However, some parents are worried about hurting their baby’s fingers.

Therefore, this process has to be done carefully using the right tool. You may have possibly heard of a baby “nail-nipper” that has a circular tip on it. This is very different than a traditional fingernail clipper.

  • Using the nail nipper correctly is the best way to ensure the best possible results. Instructions for usage are usually found on the package.
  • If you want to distract your baby you can talk to him or her while you trim the infant’s nails. It helps make the experience less intense.
  • Even if you are very careful you might still hurt your baby. If so, cotton can help stop the bleeding.
  • Another trick as far as trying to trim your baby’s nails is to trim them while your baby is still asleep. This can be done as long as the baby is sound asleep and will not wake.
  • Trimming the nails after taking a bath is the best time. This is the time when the nails are softer than they would be otherwise, and so they are easier to cut.
  • Do whatever you can while you cut your baby’s nails to distract the young infant. One way do to do this is to have you or your spouse cheer on the baby or perhaps entertain the young one in some way.

Reasons to Trim

Of course, your baby can harm him or herself if he or she scratches with his or her own nails. This is one more important reason to trim the nails and it is a more important reason than the fact that the mother can get hurt on a baby’s long nails.

The baby may also hurt others not realizing it if the nails are trimmed. For instance, the infant could come in contact with a brother or sister who may not be prepared for it.

Anyone could be around and could get hurt by a baby’s long nails. Even another adult you have invited over for the evening could possibly get scratched.

The injury may seem very small and insignificant usually. However, it may be enough to cause you to want to trim your baby’s nails.
