How To Get Rid Of Baby Fever

It is normal for body temperature to change slightly, even for a baby. However, when it is too drastic of a change this is a sign that something serious is wrong with your baby.

A further explanation of how to recognize when your baby has a fever is shown. A short bit of advice as to how to treat it is also given. Note that this is a very general article, though.

Further Explanation

Your body temperature may be slightly lower in the evening while you are sleeping versus when you are awake. This is true not only of you but of course of your baby, and for all human beings of any age.

In case you are wondering, the normal body temperature for anyone is 98 °F or 37.0 °C. Sometimes a variation of a degree or even two degrees is acceptable. In fact, part of the reason some babies experience a higher temperature is because they are overdressed.

However, of course there is differing of opinions regarding baby body temperature. Some doctors and/or parents alike say that even one degree above normal is serious cause for concern.

You should know that in some cases it is, such as when a baby is less than 8 weeks old. You can also check to see if a baby has a fever, and the baby may have a fever if sweating or if the forehead is heated.

A baby this young is advised to be checked right away. The reason why is because the infant’s immune system may not be as strong as it should be yet. This often is the case for newborns.

In this case, if a baby who is 8 weeks old or less has a slight higher temperature it may mean the infant has stomach flu. It could also be the sign of a cold coming on, or it just could be that your baby (as mentioned above) is overheated. One cause of a baby being overheated is by simply being dressed or wrapped too warm.

Consequences of Neglect

Although there are differing of opinions as to what temperature constitutes a fever in babies, there is one rule. This one rule all can agree on, and that is when it comes to newborns specifically you should error on the side of caution.

If you have any reason to believe your baby is sick you should consult a doctor. Get a doctor’s checkup as soon as possible. In the mean time take a thermometer reading and if you feel the need take the newborn or infant to the emergency room.

Treatment

When you take your baby in for a fever check-up you may be recommended a prescription medication. However, not always and in some cases your doctor may suggest some kind of over-the-counter treatment.

Your doctor may also advise you as to how to prevent future fevers. For instance, he may suggest that you sterilize your baby’s toys and/or teething gear. Any amount of prevention can help prevent future attacks of colds and other sickness.
