Hair Care For Babies

As much as your baby or toddler may fuss and fight against having the hair washed and combed it is necessary. Otherwise, the hair can become very dry and it can get messy. It also might become full of loops and it could get entangled.

The Process

Caring for your baby’s hair is a simple yet important process to perform. In order to succeed the most at doing this you may need to know a few things.

One of the most important of these is that you know your baby’s hair time. Is it think or fine? It also might be either soft or coarse, or maybe it is curly.

Since there are so many different types of hair you need to make extra sure that you find the right remedy and method of care. For instance, curly-haired heads may need to be washed more often with a different type of shampoo than would a baby who has fine or thick hair.

Other than that, here are some additional tips:

  • It is always important to be gentle when taking care of a baby’s hair. This is especially vital to the handling of a newborn infant’s head.
  • If you are washing the head of an infant who is just born chances are there is still a soft spot on the top of the baby’s head. Be very careful and do not put too much pressure on that very delicate area of the newly-arrived infant’s scalp.
  • It is highly advised that you comb your baby’s hair before even shampooing it. This is done to help get rid of the tangles before you wash it.
  • When washing an infant’s head of course it would be more appropriate to use special shampoo. The baby shampoo is more appropriate than the kind used for adults.
  • Using hair products that do not have sulfates or other additives in them. The hair soap you use should also be of a very low pH balance.
  • One important aspect of health infant hair care is properly washing the scalp. A healthy scalp means health hair growth.
  • If you wash your baby’s scalp every day it can dry out. This can interrupt the natural balance associated with hair growth. Just wash it every other day or maybe even every two days.
  • Try to make the shampooing experience as fun as possible. This will help make it less of a chore for you and it can give your child or baby something to look forward to.
  • If you trim your infant or toddler’s hair keep in mind it should be kept away from the eyes and ears. This is what causes excess tangling.
  • If your child’s scalp is red it may need to be washed more frequently with a mild shampoo. A pediatrician may even recommend a special one for this purpose.

As Your Child Grows

Of course, eventually your child will be old enough to know how to wash is or her own hair. You should teach him or her how to do this without getting soap caught in the eye.
