Cognitive Games For Summer Cottage

Often children have answers to many of life’s questions. For instance, they may wonder how volcanoes erupt or why the sky appears blue, or why clouds form. They may wonder why the leaves of tree are green or how plants drink water.

One of the most common questions that children asked is going to be explored below. That is, children often wonder why the leaves of the trees are green. Therefore, an example of a simple lesson featuring the answer to this question is shown below with an explanation.

A Simple Lesson

If you want to teach a child why the leaves are green you can do so by using certain objects put together to create a visual aid. One way to teach youngsters this lesson is to use a piece of foil, Scotch tape, diluted alcohol, and thin cup.

Then, follow these steps:

  1. Pick the leaf of any plant or tree.
  2. Cut out a small piece of foil, and if you wish make it into a shape such as a circle or star.
  3. Attach that piece of foil to the leaf with the transparent (Scotch) tape.
  4. Let the leaf with the foil taped to it sit for a week.
  5. Notice the spots where the light could not penetrate the leaf that it has turned yellow.

Conclusion-The answer to the question about why leaves are green are illustrated above. They are green because when the light from the sun hits the leaf it interacts with a substance called chlorophyll. This is why the leaves that do not get much life and/or when it is autumn or winter the leaves do not stay green-not enough light to make them green.

In case you are wondering the interaction between the sunlight and the chlorophyll is called photosynthesis. This is one of the most basic lessons that can be very easily taught to a child.

Another Lesson

You can teach a child how to drink water if you want. This could in fact remind your child the importance of giving plants and flowers enough water in the event the child has owned plants that have died.

The materials needed are color inks such as red, blue, and green, or yellow. Then, you should gather the number of glasses you would need according to the number of colors.

A few white carnations and celery stalks come in handy for this lesson as well. You should pour ink of one color about two centimeters from the bottom. Then, you should add water.

After that, you can then cut flowers or celery stalks to the appropriate length. These should be able to stand steadily in the glass. One you have placed them in the glass then you should let them sit for at least four hours.

The end result is that the water will make its way up the celery stalks (which is a stem plant) or it will crawl up the stem of the white flowers. In either case, you will notice a huge difference, especially in the flowers in that they will turn a different color.

Conclusion-You will teach the children that the water that a flower needs enters the roots up the stems. This will be evident as you have colored the water and used it to indicate passage of water though a plant.
