Baby Games Playing With Plasticine

Plasticine is an excellent material for creative work. However, you need to learn how to use it. For starters, you should only use it for children who are old enough to realize it cannot be swallowed and it also helps if you supervise your children when they are using it.

The Purpose

Placticine is a material that is often used when trying to teach a child how to build things. It helps the child learn and exercise spatial thinking concepts and it helps a child who is ready to learn about color and shape of objects. It also helps spark creativity in children.

Getting Started

If you want to reap the full benefits of using plasticine with your child make sure you choose high quality product. It should be the right consistence-not too soft, hard, or stretchy.

The kind that does not stick to your hand is the best kind to work with. Furthermore, the kind that does not fall apart in your hands is ideal.

If your child doesn’t already know how to do so, it is wise to teach him or her how to knead the plasticine. This will help soften it so that shapes and objects can be created from it.

What is plasticine used for and for what ages of a child is it appropriate?

Usually a child who is at least two years old can use it. A young toddler can do one or more of the following with plasticine:

  • Flatten a ball of it with the palm
  • Poke a finger through the pasticine after flattened
  • Pinch off a piece of it and make “sausages” with it
  • Make it stick to a piece of paper to create art

Older children probably can make numerous kinds of objects with it such as objects, flowers, imprints (i.e. a flat rock with a thumb print in it), buttons, or food (i.e. fake pizza). Beads and other jewelry pieces might also be formed from it.

Another fun project for a child of any age is to make a “cake.” If the child is old enough he or she can roll out enough of the plasticine to make a round or square cake. Then, small decorative pieces of different colors can be used to make the “frosting” of the cake and/or other cake décor.

Of course, the older a child is the more advance of art work he or she can create. You as an adult can learn various creative ways to shape the plasticine in order to ensure maximum success.
