How To Choose Clothes For A Newborn

It can be fun to purchase clothing for a newborn. However, while reveling in the joy of preparing for the arrival of your baby, try not to get carried away.

Many couples and families of couples who are expecting a baby run into the problem of purchasing too many outfits. However, before you stuff your nursery full of clothes you need to remember that your infant will grow fast, especially within the first couple of years.

Some Suggestions

You may want to wait until your baby is a little bit older before you attempt to put it in an uncomfortable outfit such as one with a lot of lace or ruffles. Newborns are a bit too squirmy and tiny for this and it can be a challenge.

You can find very cute pajama and clothing outfits as well as onesies that are still very adorable and yet they do not have all the uncomfortable fancy trims. Whatever the case may be, make sure you purchase newborn and baby clothes as loose as possible without being too “baggy.”

This will allow infants to grow into them and yet you will have purchased less outfits. As far as the number of outfits to purchase that is up to you. The general rule of thumb is to just buy as many as you can get by with as far as what the baby would wear in within about six months.

However, you can also think ahead and purchase a few clothing items for the following year or two. This will help you in case in the future you are experiencing hard times and cannot afford to buy as much clothing.

Additional Tips

Other tips can help you choose clothing for your newborn. Some of these are shown below:

  • Purchase a few undershirts with snaps. They come especially in handy when your baby first arrives home. These pieces of underclothing are also more comfortable for a newborn whose umbilical stump is still attached.
  • After the first three weeks or until the umbilical stump of your baby falls off he or she can wear onesies. You should have about 10 of these on hand, and there are some very cute ones that can double as pajamas.
  • If you want to keep your baby warm at night during the winter you can keep a few sleeper pajamas with feet on them handy. The ones with zippers on them are most convenient.
  • If you have a little girl the nightgowns with elastic bottoms would be very helpful. This helps make changing your baby in the middle of the night much easier.
  • You can find a few blanket sleepers. This will help provide both warmth and comfort for any baby five months or over in age.
  • It always is a good idea to keep several pairs of socks around. This is a good idea because they can get easily lost-even at the grocery store.

If you want to save money on the purchase of baby clothes you can shop around at secondhand and consignment shops. Newborn apparel can also be found cheaper at discount and dollar stores.
